Learning outcomes

After the course, the student is able to - use different data acquisition software - write the results of the works in a form of technical reports - use angle sensors, analyse the measurement data and knows their strengths and limitations based on own measurements - use shape memory actuators, analyse the measurement data and name their strengths and limitations based on own measurements - use piezoelectric actuators, analyse the measurement data and name their strengths and limitations based on own measurements - use micropumps and name their strengths and limitations based on own measurements - implement microfluidic structures using PDMS

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. PC-based data acquisition and control systems, the use of basic laboratory equipment.  Real-time Linux and Labview based data acquisition and control software (how to use).  Development of own data acquisition and control software.
2. Microsensors: accelerometers, hall sensors and magnetoresistive sensors. Advantages and disadvantages, how to use in practice in different applications.  Operation principles of acceleration, Hall and megnetoresistive sensors. How to use laser dispalcement sensors.
3. Active actuator materials: piezoelectric actuators and shape memory actuators. Advantages and disadvantages, how to use in practise.  Operation principles of piezoelectric, SMA, voice coil and stepper motor actuators.   Control issues of the actuators.
4. Microfluidics: PDMS microfabrication, micropumps and micromixers, microchannel flows. How to use.  Operation principles of the micropumps and micromixers.   Material properties of PDMS.

Evaluation criteria for the course

Each preliminary and final report has to be accepted before getting the final grade (accepted). Each laboratory work has its own acceptance criteria.

Assessment scale:

Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course
