Learning outcomes

Student is able to explain the formation of fibres from polymers and their blends. Student is able to explain the functional differences of conventional and high technology fibres, and apply and represent their end-uses. Student is able to explain the high technolgy manufacturing processes of functional, heat resistant, super fine, and nano-scale fibres, and evaluate their end-use possibilities. Student is able to identify the behaviour of liquid crystal polymers, and explain and compare the properties of conductive, fire retardant, phase change, shape memory, and chromatic polymers, and super-fine fibres. Student is able to evaluate and compare the manufacturing processes, properties, and end-uses of carbon and glass fibres made from different raw materials.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Progress of high technology fibres and their functional differences compared to conventional fibres. Fibre structure theory based on chemical bonds and physical structure and its effect on fibre properties. Polymer blends and their use as functional fibres. Use of additives as fibre stabilization. Anisotropic and liquid crystal polymers, and their use as fibre material.
2. Electrically conductive, fire resistant, biodegradable, phase change, chromatic, and shape memory materials.
3. Manufacturing and end-uses of ultra-fine fibres. Structure, properties and applications of carbon fibres made by different manufacturing processes.
