Learning outcomes

The course comprises of a series of lectures given by expert speakers. The lecturers and lecture topics vary from year to year, covering a wide range of research in and applications of microbiology. After passing the course the student will have a concept of what microbial ecology and industrial microbiology entail. He/she will understand microbial evolution and systematics as well as be able to classify microbial interactions and describe methods used in studying these phenomena. The student will be able to explain effects, behavior and significance of microbes in the environment of industrial scale. He/she will be able to define microbiological production processes in industry and their utilization in environmental biotechnology. Also, the student will learn to name detrimental effects of microbial origin and present methods for their prevention.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Microbial ecology: ecology and systematics, interactions  Methods in microbial ecology
2. Industrial microbiology   Probiotic bacteria
3. Metals and microbes in the environment   Bioleaching
4. Methods in molecular microbiology   Metagenomics

Evaluation criteria for the course

The grade will be determined on the basis of an exam. To pass the course with a grade 1 the student will have to score at least 50 % of the maximum points in the exam. A good understanding the core content will suffice to a grade 3. In order to earn a grade 4 or 5 the student will have to have a good or excellent understanding of complementary knowledge.
