Learning outcomes

Student should understand the basic concepts, phenomena, and deformation mechanisms of elastic and plastic deformation of materials. Student should be capable of explaining plastic deformation of crystalline solids based on dislocation theory as well as strengthening mechanisms of these materials. Also, the students should know and understand the deformation mechanisms of non-crystalline materials and the effect of the mechanisms to the mechanical properties of these materials. Student should know the basic mechanisms of fracture, fatigue and creep and to be able to design simple structures against these phenomena. Students should know the principles of mechanical materials testing and be able to interpret test results.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Elastic and plastic deformation of materials.
2. Dislocations, strengthening methods, fracture processes, fatigue and creep.
3. Mechanical materials testing.

Evaluation criteria for the course

The overall grade is determined by both the examination and exercises/homework. The examination will measure the student's knowledge of basic terminology and ability to understand broader concepts, such as diffusional creep mechanisms. Also, the exam will measure the student's ability to explain and understand different materials scientific phenomena such as strain hardening based on the newly acquired information on dislocation interactions. The exercises will measure the student's ability to process the acquired knowledge numerically and to asses related literature and test results.

Assessment scale:

Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course

Partial passing:

Completion parts must belong to the same implementation
