Learning outcomes

The course gives the basic information of the active, passive and magnetic components typivcally used in implementing power electronic converters in such away that the student can apply the basic terminology and symbols related to the components, can analyze the steady-state and switching power losses and apply the information for cooling design as well as can take into account the special requirements related to the components.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. The steady-state and dynamic behvior of diode, MOSFET and IGBT as well as their symbols and special requirements  SCR, GTO
2. The use and selection of conventional resistors, VDRs and NTCs as well as their symbols
3. The use and selection of capacitors for filtering and EMI applications
4. Snubber design principles  Ridley method based on the characteristic impedancé of a resonant LC circuit
5. The basic magnetic theory and design principles of transformers and inductors as well as loss mechanisms in the core and windings
6. Cooling design and analysis principles utilizing circuit theory analogy.

Evaluation criteria for the course
