Requirements
For 14 ECTS credits: Accepted design projects of the given area, a written research paper on a topic related to the course theme, a short oral presentation of the paper, examination (short essays).
For 11 ECTS credits: Accepted design projects of the given area, a written research paper on a topic related to the course theme, a short oral presentation of the paper.
Completion parts must belong to the same implementation
Principles and baselines related to teaching and learning
The course is divided in two: lecture part (in Finnish) and project task part (task and guidance in English). In addition, it contains a seminar presentation and an essay. The project task is done in pairs. The students are encouraged to discuss and evaluate their work together during the design process. Group working skills and peer learning are practiced. Writing skills are practiced with either a research essay or literary essay.
Learning outcomes
On finishing the course the student is able to recognize the main stages of modern urban planning history as well as the corresponding social links. He/she knows how to dimension the functions of a residential area and knows the basics of traffic planning and landscape design. He/she recognizes the main factors of civic design and is able to apply them in designing public urban spaces. He/she is able to describe the basics of Finnish planning system and planning process. He/she recognizes planning markings and requirements and is able to compile the documents needed in a simple town plan.

Evaluation criteria for the course
The focus of assessment is on the project task. In evaluation it is especially noted how innovatively and diversely the design has been developed from the chosen starting points.
