Requirements
Students must apply to participate in this course in Fall 2012, or at the latest the first two weeks of 2013. The application for admission will include: 1. submission of the application form, which is to be signed by a thesis/ research supervisor and 2. a short plan (in the form of an outline) for what the participant intends to write during the Spring, i.e. a thesis, dissertation or research article. First priority will be given to post-graduate students. This will be submitted to the responsible lecturer: richard.vancamp@tut.fi There will be a mandatory first meeting for all participants which introduce the aims and working methods of the course in week 3 of 2013. Participants will be grouped according to their fields, aims, and levels into groups of 3 or 4. These groups will function as support groups for writing during the Spring of 2013. The groups will meet at least 3 times with the instructor. In advance of each meeting, participants will email drafts of their work and 45 minutes will be given to discussing each individual’s writing in the meeting. Attendance and active participation in these meetings, through submission of texts and peer feedback, are a mandatory element of this course. In addition to these meetings, participants will create a learning portfolio. This portfolio will consist of: 1. a manuscript developed over the Spring with the help of the small groups 2.evidence of completion of at least 5 on-line modules (see below) 3. a 200-300 word statement describing what the participant learned and a list of modules completed The self-study modules will be in Moodle and cover a variety of academic writing issues. Students will be suggested certain modules depending on their levels, experiences, and particular challenges with regard to research writing. These modules will need to be completed in an agreed timetable.
Principles and baselines related to teaching and learning
The course will involve small group meetings with peers and an instructor. Feedback will be given in this way. This feedback should help in intensive revision of submitted manuscripts.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, participants should be better able to organize sections of a research article or thesis; take a stance towards their research area through citation; write extended text which is clear and easy for the reader to follow; and write in an academic style. Moreover, through investigation of example papers from their field, students will be able to identify and employ rhetorical strategies and language characteristic of writing in their particular fields. In addition to this core content, participants will also learn to their own texts with the help of criteria, strategies, and on-line tools introduced in this course. This course may be both a stand-alone course with mixed groups, or it may be tailored for a particular department and/ or integrated with another course such as research methods.
Evaluation criteria for the course
The course will be evaluated on a pass-fail basis according to the completion of a learning portfolio.

Additional information about prerequisites
Prerequisites: Students attending this course must
• be at a language level of C1
• have completed bachelor’s studies
• be starting or in the process of writing a master’s thesis or a research article (students who do not fall in this category are encouraged to take Kie-3377 Scientific Writing in English)
Students may be asked to submit evidence of the above criteria before the course begins in the form of an application to be signed by a supervisor. This application must be submitted before week 3 of 2013 when the course begins.
