Learning outcomes

The student can tell about the techniques, devices, applications and economics of the micro and desktop manufacturing after having performed the study module. She/he can explain the principles of machining, forming and joining methods used in micro production. The student can analyse the effectiveness of the production system. The course is mainly for non-silicon based manufacturing.

1. Overview of micro and desktop engineering: micro and desktop products and systems, market and industrial development issues, design methodology, manufacturing technologies, manufacturing facilities and future of micro manufacturing   materials for micro manufacturing,manufacturing innovation    
2. Micro machining, forming and joining technology and systems: grinding/milling, EDM, micro embossing (hot and UV), injection moulding, laser machining, mechanical assembly, laser joining, soldering, packaging   photo chemical etching, forming (bulk, sheet, laser, hydro),laser patterning,    
3. Micro hybrid technology and systems: micro surface treatment, thin film fabrication, liga   photo electric forming   
4. Micro and desktop manufacturing system engineering: micro- and desktop manufacturing systems, handling for micro manufacturing, metrology for micro manufacturing, manufacturing system integration and software  in-situ micro materials testing    
5. Micro and desktop manufacturing economics: competitiveness of the technologies and systems, technology and equipment utilisation, economical considerations of micro manufacturing      

Evaluation criteria for the course

Exam (2/3), seminar work (1/3)

Assessment scale:

Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course
