Requirements
Students must submit an application form in order to participate in this course which begins in January 2013. Please submit the application early, during the Fall, or in the first two weeks of December at the latest. The signed application for admission, which includes a description of your level and research topic, can be found here under course "documents" in the "materials" section under the course implementation for 2012-2013. Priority will be given to participants in the TUT President's Doctoral Programme. There will be a mandatory first meeting for all participants which introduces the aims and working methods of the course in week 3 of 2013. Participants will be grouped according to their fields, aims, and levels into groups of 3 or 4. These groups will function as support groups for writing during the Spring of 2013. The groups will meet at least 3 times with the instructor, preferably in K2202A. In advance of each meeting, participants will deliver drafts of their work and 45 minutes will be given to discussing each individual's writing in the meeting. Attendance and active participation in these meetings, through submission of texts and peer feedback, are a mandatory element of this course. In addition to these meetings, participants will create a learning portfolio. This portfolio will consist of: 1. a manuscript developed over the Spring with the help of the small groups and instructor; 2. evidence of completion of at least five on-line modules on research writing(see below); 3. and a short cover-statement describing what the participant accomplished during the course and an evaluation of his/her skills. The self-study modules will be in Moodle2 and cover a variety of academic writing issues. Students will be suggested certain modules depending on their levels, prior experience, and particular challenges with regard to research writing. These modules will need to be completed in an agreed timetable.
Principles and baselines related to teaching and learning
The course will involve irregular course meetings, self-study assignments, submission of parts of the article or thesis for feedback, and small group meetings with the instructor. Feedback given by the instructor and peers in these small groups should help in intensive revision of submitted manuscripts.
Learning outcomes
This course supports the development of a manuscript for publication or acceptance for graduation at the master's or doctoral level. The development of this manuscript will happen through peer and instructor support in small groups. While developing the above manuscript, participants will complete self-study modules. The goal of these modules are that participants should be better able to organize sections of a research article or thesis; take a stance towards their research area through citation; write extended text which is clear and easy for the reader to follow; and write in an academic style. Moreover, through investigation of example papers from their field, students will be able to identify and employ rhetorical strategies and language characteristic of writing in their particular fields. This course may be both a stand-alone course with mixed groups, or it may be tailored for a particular department and/ or integrated with another course such as research methods.
Evaluation criteria for the course
The course will be evaluated on a pass-fail basis. Areas of the writing assessed: organization, flow, readability, and significance.
Assessment scale:
Evaluation scale passed/failed will be used on the course
