Requirements
Lectures and related analysis and design task. Design project on the large scale of urban planning and design.
Completion parts must belong to the same implementation

Learning outcomes
After the course the student is able to interpret and explain urban development on the levels of region, urban region and the city, on the basis of recent urban and planning theoretical literature. The student is able to produce analyses of this development, and produce strategic plans with adequate quantitative and qualitative criteria. The student is able to illustrate the plans to mediate the essential goals of his/her plan. The student can explain the regulatory frames concerning planning in large scale levels and is able to refer to the relevant documents in short notice.

This course contemplates a rapidly progressing international border region. The target area is located in the south-eastern part of Finland, Kymenlaakso, South-Karelia and Russian Karelia. The aim is to recognize unforeseen features, challenges and opportunities of the region by analyzing data and communicating with local actors. Emerging from this work the participants will carry out an urban design project with high level of concrecy. A three-days excursion to the target region is part of the course.
