Learning outcomes
After passing the course the student can discriminate between different levels of genetic information from DNA to proteins. He/she will have an understanding of processes related to gene expression and linking genome to functioning of cells. The student can associate various cellular and environmental events to levels of gene expression and metabolism. He/she can explain the methods and rationale of manipulation of microbial genomes as well as basics of synthetic biology. The student will learn the basics of microbial crosstalk and its consequences.
Content
Content | Core content | Complementary knowledge | Specialist knowledge |
1. | Genes and genetic information | DNA sequencing
2. | Regulation of gene expression | Microbial circuits and metabolism
3. | Linking genome with function | Manipulation of microbial genomes | Synthetic biology |
4. | Molecular biotechniques in environmental studies | Detection of microbes | Quorum sensing |
Evaluation criteria for the course
The grade will be determined on the basis of an exam. To pass the course with a grade 1 the student will have to score at least 50 % of the maximum points in the exam. A good understanding the core content will suffice to a grade 3. In order to earn a grade 4 or 5 the student will have to have a good or excellent understanding of complementary and specialist knowledge.
Assessment scale:
Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course
