The courses MAT-55016 Mathematics Special Assignment and MAT-51606 Project Work in Mathematics are similar: the student works independently on a topic agreed with the teacher. In MAT-55016 the emphasis is on scientific writing and the extent is fixed (5 credits) with a numerical grade. In MAT-51606 the emphasis is on being able to plan and carry out a project on schedule, the deliverables can include e.g. presentations and software in addition to a written report, and the extent is flexible (2-10 credits) with a pass/fail grade.

The objective of the course is to develop the student's ability to understand mathematical texts and skills in producing written and graphical mathematical material. The project may take the form of writing an essay, implementing an algorithm, carrying out a small research project, etc. The topic may be proposed by the student.
