Learning outcomes
This course starts the Master's Degree Programme on Business and Technology and consists of two parts. The first part introduces students to management studies, providing an overview on how different functions contribute to the success of a company and the key management tools and concepts used in them. To understand 'success' in a business context, the first part introduces Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow Statement, as well as the key financial ratios. Whereas the first, intensive part focuses on management in general, the second part prepares students for more advanced studies in marketing and supply chain management. After the second part, students understand the special characteristics of B2B markets as well as the different strategies how companies can organize their operations and logistics in today’s networked business environment, including also basic understanding on operative sales and sourcing processes typical when companies do business with other companies internationally. The second part also covers how development of global business networks influences companies’ financial positions, hence deepening students’ understanding on financial management. One of the core areas of the course is the extensive company project. These company projects mainly focus on business development in global sales and sourcing processes, to deepen students’ practical knowledge on (1) operative sales and sourcing processes and (2) provide hands-on experience on business development. Foreign students will be assigned Finnish companies whereas Finnish students will have an opportunity to work with foreign companies. The company projects required to pass the course hence prepare students for business development projects in general and those practical challenges young business development professionals often face when attempting to 'get things done' in a corporate setting without formal authority.
