Learning outcomes

Student can use the terminology and the definitions used in the field of biomedical materials science. Student is able to separate differences between material groups and materials. Student can name the most common materials in the field of biomedical materials science. Student can explain the structures, properties and differences of the most common materials as well as explain how and why different materials are used for different clinical applications.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Classifications of medical biomaterials, general issues about materials.   More comprehensive knowledge about the classifications.   Different biomedical materials and the classification according to specific properties.
2. Biocompatibility and interactions between biomaterials and body environment.  Interactions of different materials between different tissues.  Interactions between different tissues and material surfaces.
3. Biomaterial groups: Metals, polymers, bioceramics, composites.   Properties of the materials in the material groups. Clinical use of the materials.   Structures of the materials. The structure related properties and phenomena in the human body.

Evaluation criteria for the course

Grades 1-2: Learning outcomes have been achieved. Satisfactory command in core content of the course. Grades 3-4: Some learning outcomes have been exceeded qualitatively or quantitatively. Good command in core content and complementary knowledge of the course. Good or very good marks from all parts of the course. Grade 5: Most of the learning outcomes have been exceeded. Deep command in the whole content of the course. Almost maximum performance in all parts of the course.
