Course Catalog 2012-2013
FYS-5516 Nonlinear Optics I, 4 cr |
Additional information
This course should not be taken by those who have earlier taken FYS-5506 Fundamentals of nonlinear optics
Suitable for postgraduate studies
Will not be lectured year 2012-2013
Person responsible
Martti Kauranen, Goery Genty
Requirements
Graded homework (40%), examination (60%)
Learning outcomes
After taking this course, the student is able to analyze second- and third-order nonlinear optical responses of materials using the susceptibility formalism. The student is able to formulate the wave equations that describe the basic nonlinear interactions and to solve them in simple cases while taking into account the influence of phase matching. The student is able to apply these methods to phenomena based on frequency conversion, nonlinear index of refraction and four-wave mixing.
