Principles and baselines related to teaching and learning
The course is carried out partly in Moodle-learning environment and partly lectures. One design project work and weekly web questions are also essential part of the course.
Learning outcomes
After the course the student has general perspective for applying sustainable solutions in design of fluid power systems. The objective of the course is to awaken students for using sustainable solutions in design and to offer basic tools for application of environmentally friendly hydraulic fluids, energy efficient solutions, system life cycle management, leakage management, noise control and safe design solutions.
Content
Content | Core content | Complementary knowledge | Specialist knowledge |
1. | Environmentally friendly hydraulics fluids; their use and compatibility | Ecology of fluids, vegetable oils, ester based hydraulic fluids, synthetic hydrocarbons | Chemical properties of different fluids |
2. | Water-based hydraulic fluids; their use and compatibility | Water as a pressure medium in hydraulic systems; additives | Structures and properties of emulsions and water-glycols |
3. | Energy efficient solutions in hydraulics; basic solutions, more advanced solutions | Energy recovery systems | Defining energy balance, special systems |
4. | Minimizing leakages, different sealing systems | Special sealings | Dimensioning of sealing systems |
5. | Noise control of hydraulic systems | Noise attenuation | Pressure pulsation attenuation |
6. | Condition monitoring of hydraulic systems | System level condition monitoring; system life cycle management | Fault analysis |
7. | Basic safety solutions in hydraulic systems | Safety in design | System design |
Evaluation criteria for the course
Evaluation is made according to written final exam. When the student has adopted the core content well, it is possible to get grade 3. To reach grade 4 the student must also adopt complementary knowledge issues. The get grade 5 the student must also adopt specialist knowledge issues. If there is minor shortages is core content, the studen has possibility get grade 1 or 2. If there are major shortages is core content, the student will not pass the course.
Assessment scale:
Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course
