Principles and baselines related to teaching and learning

Lectures and exercises are given during the first period. A homework assignment is done during the second period.

Learning outcomes

The goal of the course is to familiarize students with wireless radio propagation mechanisms and phenomena of mobile radio channel. After the course, a student has good working knowledge about radio channel modelling issues and he is able to utilize this knowledge in both radio network planning tasks and link-level system modelling tasks.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. 1. RADIO PROPAGATION MECHANISMS After this section the students can explain the differences between the main propagation mechanisms and solve simple numerical problems related to the reflection and diffraction.
2. 2. PROPAGATION PREDICTION MODELS After this section, the students can categorize different propagation models in several ways and list the advantages and disadvantages for the different models depending on the category. In addition, students learn how to solve numerical propagation problems with Okumura-Hata and several other models.
3. 3. MOBILE RADIO CHANNEL AND FADING MODELS After this section, the students understands the differences between fast and slow fading radio channels and they are able to categorize radio channels based on the coherence-time, the coherence-bandwidth and the system properties.
4. 4. ATMOSPHERIC EFFECTS & SATELLITE RADIO CHANNELS After this section, the students can list the main differences between radio channel models used for satellite radio links and the terrestrial radio links.
5. 5. SPATIAL MOBILE RADIO CHANNELS After this section, the students can describe how MIMO radio channel modeling differs from the SISO radio channel modeling.
