Examination from given material, accepted laboratory work.

Learning Outcomes

After course student can list different stages of ceramic manufacturing process. Student can explain how different raw material selection and processing steps affect to final structure of material. Student can apply the additive systems for colloidal processing. Student can select shape forming method when producing mass production components small series and different shapes of components. The student can suggest heat treatment cycles for power compacts having different raw materials and made by shape forming methods.

1. Powder manufacturing methods.Wet methods, gas phase methods, pyrolysis. Sol-gel technology.  Emulsion techniques, nanopowders.   
2. Powder processing methods. Milling, screening, additive systems, spray drying.     
3. Characterization methods used in ceramic materials processing at different manufacturing stages. Density, porosity, surface area, pore size, particle size, dilatometry.  Thermal analysis.   
4. Colloidal processing. Interaction of particle surfaces. Stabilization methods. Additive systems in colloidal processing. Basic rheology.  Time dependent rheology.   
5. Shape forming. Pressing techniques, slip casting, extrusion, injection molding, tape casting.  Special technigues, gel-casting, 3D shaping.   
6. Heat treatment cycle. Drying, binder burn out, calcination, solid state sintering, liquid phase sintering.   Laser techniques, spark plasma sintering.   
7. Glass processing, glass quenching.   Glass fibres.
