Description:

Signal Processing is becoming a key specialty in biology related efforts, both in research and in industry, particularly in the area of Systems Biology, whose studies usually involve the need to analyze large amounts of data, generally poised with noise sources. In this course, students will gain experience in the interpretation and analysis of recent, major scientific publications in the area of Systems Biology. Further, the students will gain experience in how to enquiry and discuss the results of a paper as if in the environment of a scientific meeting. Finally, the students will gain experience in how to present the results of a scientific work to the scientific community. This course will be taught using a hands-on approach. Each student will be given the opportunity to present the results of a scientific publication, which the student can choose from a pre-defined list of publications. The presentation will be in same form as in scientific meetings, lasting 30 mins + 15-30 mins for questions from the audience. Additionally, each student must attend to presentations from other students, a minimum of 5 presentations. When acting as a spectator, the student will be asked to fill a form in which he/she provides feedback about the presentation. Also, the student will be encouraged to enquiry the speaker regarding the scientific findings reported. Theme of 2014: Asymmetries in Biology
