Working methods
Lectures are given concerning architectural consequences of building repairs in suburbs, energy efficient and ecological renovation methods and visual possibilities transforming suburban areas. Workshop or design-meetings are once a week where students present their ideas and proposals for common discussion.
Exercise
Drawing a renovation plan for an apartment building or building block constructed with prefabricated methods and located in suburban area. If needed, student can design his/hers own native project or a given one from Finland. Taking part to an architectural competition concerning suburban repair is also one possibility.
Completion parts must belong to the same implementation

Sustainable models for buildings’ second life and community development. Renovation as an ever-present objective to be achieved through a series of specific interventions that ranges from correct maintenance and/or reuse and transformation of buildings to urban redevelopment

| 1. | The aim of the course is to go deep into specific issues within sustainable building renovation of 1970-1980 prefabricated concrete-element blocks and to provide design skills for demanding renovation project or complete transformation process of degenerated apartment blocks. Course deals with the environmental effects of suburban repair from the architectural point of view. Particular attention is also paid to issues concerning energy conservation and energy renovations. It discusses the birth history of suburbs, the ideological background, the planning and design ideas prevalent at the time as well as the theoretical background. It also deals with the permanent values and characteristics of entire suburban areas. |
Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes
Drawing a renovation plan for an apartment building or building block constructed with prefabricated methods and located in suburban area. If needed, student can design his/hers own native project or a given one from Finland. Taking part to an architectural competition concerning suburban repair is also one possibility.

| The aim of the course is to study specific issues related to sustainable renovation of 1960-80s prefabricated apartment blocks and to learn design skills for demanding renovation, refurbishment and transformation of degenerated apartment blocks. The course deals with the environmental effects of refurbishment and repair from the architectural viewpoint. Particular attention is paid to energy and resource conservation. The course covers the history of large-panel suburbs; the current state; emerging challenges and different approaches to addressing the existing building stock. |
