Department of History and Philosophy

The Department of History and Philosophy at the University of Tampere comprises two disciplines: history and philosophy. This unique and innovative department was created when the Philosophy joined in the Department of History in the Faculty of Humanities in January 2008.

History and Philosophy arrange teaching and research in their own fields; however, shared activities will be arranged to provide students with deeper understanding of both fields. Furthermore, joint research opportunities are arising from the cooperation within the disciplines.

In addition to these, the Department hosts several minor subjects including the following: Economic and Social History; History of Ideas and Learning; Latin Language and Classical Heritage; North American Studies and Philosophy of Life (for school teachers). Especially for foreign students is also offered the Nordic Perspective on European History Programme.
