General description

*Introduction to Finnish Gender Studies (5 ECTS)
19^th October to 11^th December 2009*

Introduction to Finnish Women?s Studies centres around three themes: the concept of gender, gender equality, and (gendered) power. Through these themes the student will gain an insight into Finnish society and some contexts in which gender, equality and power are significant factors. The course is divided into three sections, each of two weeks, centering around the themes, and each teacher is responsible for one theme. For each theme the students will read two or more texts and discuss them in smaller groups in the Moodle learning environment.

The course is organized by the Universities of Helsinki and Tampere, Åbo Akademi and Hilma-University Network of Women?s Studies. The teachers of the course are Ph.D. Anu Hirsiaho, MA Eva Mikaela Kinnari and Ph.D. Annamari Vänskä.

The course is aimed at the exchange students of gender studies in Universities of Helsinki, Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Lappi, Oulu, Tampere, Turku and Åbo Akademi. During the course, the students will learn some important themes of Women?s and Gender Studies with a specific Finnish perspective.
