The overall goal is to gain understanding of how understanding of peace and peacemaking have changed during the past century. The course introduces the development and major changes in ideals and practices of international peacemaking from the post-World War One era to the present and concentrating in the development of peace mediation, transformation of peace-keeping to peace-building and the changing role of international third party. The focus will be, on the one hand, on change of practices of peacemaking but, on the other hand, on their theoretical and ideological basis. The students learn to recognize and critically discuss about peacemaking dilemma between international (peaceful) intervention to the end violent conflict and to build conditions for sustainable peace (good aims) and the ignorance of local ownership and practices (interventionist coercion). During the course it is examined how the standard of civilization(s), principle of national self-determination, human rights norms and the ideal of liberal peace cherishing democracy, rule of law and markets have influenced peacemaking. Special emphasis is given to Nordic peacemakers and Nordic model.

-Managing identities: solving ethnic conflicts from the League of Nations to the present
-From inter-state to trans-national conflicts: transformation of peacemaking tools and agency
-Liberal peace and its critic: from peace-building to peace-formation
-Agonistic peace and dialogues: looking for a new approach

Lecture plus articles, seminar (presenting selected cases).
