Genes and genome structure will be considered from both a functional and an evolutionary perspective.
The course will cover prokaryotic and eukaryotic gene organization, plasmids, repetitive DNA, centromeres, telomeres, transposable and mobile elements, organelle genomes and programmed DNA rearrangements as well as an introductory overview of molecular evolution and evolutionary genetics. DNA replication, recombination and repair will be considered both mechanistically and from a functional standpoint.
33% by homework assignments, 33% group work and 33% by final exam.
Passing the final exam (independently of homework and group work marks) will be required.
