Learning outcomes

The aim of the General Studies is to help the student to start the studies and to finish them successfully.

During the studies the student will
- understand what it takes to study at university level; the student knows the structure of the Master's degree programme and how to plan the studies independently and responsibly and how to take courses and where to get advice, and realises the importance of his/her independent work in progressing in studies.
- know how to seek information needed in MSc studies
- know how to use university's IT services.
- learn how to communicate in academic and working life and how to develop these skills independently.

General studies in the Master's degree programmes given in English are different depending on the student's educational background.

Content

Compulsory General Studies for students who have taken Bachelor's degree at SIS, 6 ECTS:
- Personal study planning 1 ECTS (part of Study Skills and Personal Study Planning 2 ECTS). Personal Study Planning credit is given when the degree studies are complete.
- English: KKENMP3 Scientific Writing 5 ECTS
NB: Students who have taken their BSc in SIS and have officially transferred to the Human-Technology Interaction,Internet and Game Studies, or Software Development programme are exempted from English language testing and English language courses if they finish their Master's degree in the HTI, IGS, or SDE programme by 31 July 2015. This is based on the School's transition regulations 1(in Finnish)at http://www.uta.fi/sis/en/studies/studying/language_studies.html and and School's transition regulations 2 at http://www.uta.fi/sis/en/studies/Studies_started_before_2012.html.

Compulsory General Studies for students with school education in Finnish and Bachelor's degree taken outside SIS, 9-13 ECTS:
- Orientation 2 ECTS
- Study Skills and Personal Study Planning 2 ECTS (including Basics of Information Literacy 1 ECTS and Personal Study Planning 1 ECTS; Personal Study Planning credit is given when the degree studies are complete)
- English: Assessment test (and self-studies in English if needed) 0 ECTS
- English: KKENMP3 Scientific Writing 5 ECTS
- only those Finnish students who have not taken Swedish in their Bachelor's degree / Swedish: KKRULUK Ruotsin kielen kirjallinen ja suullinen viestintä 4 ECTS

Compulsory General Studies for international students, 12 ECTS:
- Orientation 2 ECTS
- Study Skills and Personal Study Planning 2 ECTS (including Basics of Information Literacy 1 ECTS and Personal Study Planning 1 ECTS). Personal Study Planning credit is given when the degree studies are complete
- English: Assessment test (and self-studies in English if needed) 0 ECTS
- English: KKENMP3 Scientific Writing 5 ECTS
- Finnish: KKSU1 Elementary Finnish 1 3 ECTS

Optional General Studies for all students:
- YKYYKV1 Finnish Society and Culture 1-5 ECTS
