To assess the achievements of the Putin presidency in dismantling the oligarchic politics of the 1990s and to discuss the relation between the reconstitution of the state and the development of substantive democracy in Russia.

Contents

The genealogy of post-communist Russian statehood since 1991, changing configurations of state-business relations and relations between the public and the private, the dialectical relationship between bureaucratic and oligarchic tendencies.
