The course requires good knowledge on principles of molecular biology, particularly, biosynthesis of DNA, RNA and proteins, i.e. the Crick's Central Dogma.

Curricula
2009 –
2010
Molecular virology is one of the more advanced course on microbiology.
Learning outcomes
The emphasis of the course will be on viruses as self-contained genetic elements and their inbuilt developmental programmes, representing paradigms for the broader understanding of gene expression and development.
Contents
Bacteriophages, plant and animal viruses will be covered, but with an emphasis on major classes of pathogenic viruses exemplifying different mechanistic principles, including retroviruses, herpesviruses and picornaviruses. Regulatory circuitry, viral evolution, evasion of host defenses and vaccine development will also be addressed.
Teaching methods
Students have to prepare and give an oral presentaion of a selected virus or a virus group.
Teaching language
English
If all the students understand Finnish, the language is Finnish.
Modes of study
Lectures and other material as advised with the text book.
Evaluation
Numeric 1-5.
Recommended year of study
4. year spring
4. period.
Study materials
The examinable material is the entire text book Cann, A, (2005) Principles of Molecular Virology, The Fourth Edition.
