Preceding studies
Level A English at upper secondary school, or equivalent skills (B1-B2 level of language competence). To achieve the required starting level, students may for example take an English prep course.

Learning outcomes

After completing this study module, students will
- understand general factual and scientific texts
- understand texts of their own field
- to some extent be able to produce factual style texts
These skills will help students in their studies and later in following their own field and improving professional international communication.

Contents

During this course, students will
- read and analyse texts from different fields and become familiar with vocabularies that are universally scientific and essential to the subjects in question, and with the meanings of prefixes and suffixes
- examine the structure of academic text and the functions of its parts, the clue words indicating the semantic relations of a text, and linguistic structures that are essential to understanding texts
- use the words in texts and vocabularies in active writing
