General description
This course allows students to focus on a specific area of intercultural communication by completing an independent research project. The topic of the project may be related to an ICS course or some other aspect of intercultural communication. The project can be done individually or with a partner. Students must apply to take this course by contacting the ICS instructors. The topic, format and schedule will be negotiated with the ICS instructors early in the semester. This course is primarily for students who need to complete the whole ICS program within 2 periods; therefore, only those lacking credits for completion will be considered for the Independent Project.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will have
- further investigated an area of intercultural communication studies - demonstrated their ability to complete a small independent research project - reflected on and assessed their skills pertaining to the task
Contents
To achieve the learning outcomes, students will
- have a preliminary discussion with an ICS instructor - write a project proposal as determined by the instructor(s) - carry out the project according to the agreed upon schedule - present their findings - engage in reflective writing throughout the process - engage in self-assessment
