Learning outcomes

After completing the course student can define different types and sources of stem cells. Student can define the most common stem cell culture methods. Student knows basic stem cell differentiation methods. Student can explain the reasons to use of various differentiation factors to generate most commonly generated cell types. In addition they can describe how plasticity of cells can be utilized to manipulate the functions of cells. Student knows how to work with stem cells.

Contents

Students will learn which are the different sources and types of stem cells. Students will learn most common stem cell culture and differentiation methods. Embryonic, induced and adult stem cells; stem cell differentiation using chemical, mechanical and electron stimulations; stem cells in nerve, cardiac, mesenchymal (soft and skeletal) and retinal tissues; laboratory practical.

Further information on prerequisites and recommendations

Vacination for tetanus and hepatitis (A+B)required due to the work with human samples. When selecting the course participants the priority is given to the UTA Biotechnology and TUT Biotechnology programme students.
