Learning outcomes

To understand the basic features of the most important phenomena and research studies of economic and social history. Emphasis on the central and current problems of our time.

Contents

P2–P6 Perspectives into Economic and Social History, 20 ECTS. The courses P2-P6 consist of 20 ECTS altogether; one theme may consist of 10 ECTS at the most. Alternative literature or course may be negotiated with the teacher.

(a) World Economics and History of Globalization (5 ECTS)
(b) Finnish Economic History (5 ECTS)
(c) History of Business (5 ECTS)

Teaching methods

Lectures and exercises, a book exam or an essay negotiated with the teacher in charge of the course. Alternative literature must be negotiated with the teacher as well.

(a) World Economics and History of Globalisation

Stearns, Peter, The Industrial Revolution in World History (1998) and Chang, Ha-Joon, Kicking away the Ladder. Development Strategy in Historical Perspective (2002).

(b) Finnish Economic History

One volume of Suomen maatalouden historia (I-III, 2003-2004) and Pihkala, Erkki, Suomalaiset maailmantaloudessa (2001) .

(c) History of Business

Micklethwait, John & Wooldridge, Adrian, The Company: A Short History of a Revolutionary Idea (2003) and alternativel either Schybergson, Per, Työt ja päivät. Ahlströmin historia 1851-1981 (1992) or Vainio-Korhonen, Kirsi, Ruokaa, vaatteita, hoivaa. Naiset ja yrittäjyys paikallisena ja yleisenä ilmiönä 1700-luvulta nykypäivään (2002).
