Learning outcomes

The aim is to provide an overview of the design of a large information system and the design of the databases of an organisation. The emphasis is on information requirements analysis and specification, and on database analysis, definition and design conducted on the basis of information requirements.

Contents

Information, data and knowledge. Terminology concerning information and different systems of abstraction levels applied in the design of information systems. Enterprise Architecture. The identification and description of the target area of an information system. Communication in an organisation, its theory and applications. Use of business rules as the basis and method of design. The analysis and definition of the information requirements of an organisation, and database analysis, definition and design based on them: theory, methods and tools. Users' views and their integration. Basics of Concept D language. Enhanced ER model. Object-role model. UML class diagrams. The use of a relational model as a tool. From relational models to object models. The use of an object model as a tool. The organisation of a database project.
