To provide a systematic introduction to the linguistic description of English grammar and usage, and to familiarise students with the terminology used in standard reference works.
Contents
Half of this course concentrates on the English verbs, particularly on tenses, aspects and modalities. Students become acquainted with noun phrases, with particular emphasis on explaining article usage. Topics are introduced during the lectures, and questions related to them (or the course book) are discussed in the tutorials following the lectures.
