General description

The course is suitable for beginning doctoral students and late stage M.Sc. students. It is highly recommended if the plan is to include an experiment in the M.Sc. thesis.

Learning outcomes

After the course the student:
- Knows the strengths and weaknesses of the experimental research method
- Can plan simple experiments and analyze the results using appropriate statistical tests
- Can report an experimental study in a scientific publication.

Contents

Theoretical foundations of experimental research, operationalization of research questions, choice of experiment design and its connections to the analysis and conclusions, the most common statistical methods in HCI, reporting of experimental research, procedures related to research ethics, and homework exercises.
