General description

Students studying for a degree in economics should be familiar with the language and terminology of economics in Swedish. It is a prerequisite of companies, the employers of university and college graduates. For a future expert in business, it is very important to possess the skills to use Swedish in Finland as well as in Nordic relations. The importance of Swedish skills in business is now greater than ever.

This course is in accordance with the Finnish legislation Act 424/2003 on the knowledge of languages required of personnel in public bodies, Act 481/2003 on demonstrated proficiency in the Swedish and Finnish languages, and with Decree 794/2004 on university degrees. Compulsory language studies course.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students will be able to communicate appropriately in tasks in working and social life both orally and in writing. Students will
- understand normal-speed general spoken language
- be able to talk and use mostly correct structures, general vocabulary and the terminology of their own field. Students can actively and easily participate in conversations, give introductions, present, advise, describe, negotiate and express and justify opinions.
- be able to use target-language sources of information independently for their own purposes

Contents

Part C:
- listening comprehension exercises
- pronunciation exercises
- conversation practice with different themes of everyday life
- an oral presentation using PowerPoint and graphs
- telephone conversations, number practice, business communication exercises
Part D:
- exercises on presenting oneself, a company and one's region
- conversation practice with different themes, such as studies, working life, current events and topics selected by the students
- oral argumentation and response exercises
- holding short presentations
- economics terminology exercises

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Numeric 1-5.
Evaluation by active participation. Evaluation of the oral C and D parts is based on constant assessment and oral presentation, with C also on listening comprehension and pronunciation test. The average grade from parts C and D will form the grade of oral communication on a scale satisfactory or good (1-3 satisfactory, 4-5 good).

Students can be exempted from Oral Communication of Business Swedish I by taking an exam organised by agreement.
