Learning outcomes

To master the basics of Latin and to be able to produce written Latin texts. To become familiar with Latin literature and the principles of academic research work.

Study materials

Students choose a selection of the following texts and read them using comments and translations: Virgil, Georgica, one book (with comments by T. Oksala, and the entire book translated into Finnish) (1,5 ECTS); Aeneid, e.g. the 6th book (2 ECTS); Horatius, Ars poetica (with comments by T. Oksala and E. Palmén) (1,5 ECTS); a selection of odes (with comments by T. Oksala and E. Palmen) (2 ECTS); Catullus, Liber carminum (3 ECTS); Lucretius, one book (2 ECTS); approximately 500 verses of satire by Horatio or Juvenal or epigrams by Martial (1 ECTS); approximately 500 verses of Roman elegies (Propertius, Tibullus, Ovid) (1 ECTS).
