Learning outcomes

The aim of the module is to lay the groundwork for the students' communication competencies in English in both the academic and professional arenas.

After successful completion of the module, the students will
- understand the foundations of professional communication
- understand the differences between different styles of spoken and written English and their use
- understand the importance of critical reading with regard to written sources
- understand the importance of self-directed language learning as a part of their academic and professional development
- be able to understand and analyse the terminology and structure of a text in their own field
- be able to apply information search tools to their own language learning

Contents

The module will go through
- the different factors involved in professional and academic communication, including the role of identity
- the students' individual language skills, levels and needs
- the differences between informal and formal styles in both written and spoken English
- different tools for self-directed language learning, especially those for learning technology
- the questions involved in the critical evaluation and reading of written sources
- the structure of news reports and the linguistic differences between informal and formal examples
- the structure and the linguistic features of academic articles

For students studying towards a Bachelor's degree in economics.
