The student will have a sound understanding of the concepts of security and safety, the new contexts relevant to research and the social scientific theories of security. - The student will understand the global security assemblages and issues of global security governance (including cyber security) - The student will understand the development and the content of security sector related policies and activities of the EU, the implications of EU policies and actions of the governance and management of security on national and local level

Themes: history and theoretical frameworks of security governance and the role of security organisations in state-building, consepts of security and safety, contemporary social scientific research on security, global security networks and security governance systems, the EU internal security and other security strategies, the nature of national security strategies, security policy-making processes, community safety partnerships and local safety planning.
