Learning outcomes

To become familiar with the main trends and most important authors and books of the French 17th and 18th century literature.

Contents

French literature of the 17th and 18th century and literary history. The course is divided into literary history and literary analysis.

Study materials

For the literary analysis: Dominique Moncond'hui: Histoire de la littérature française du XVIIe siècle; Nicole Masson: Histoire de la littérature française du XVIIIe siècle.

At least two of the following books per century will be studied in class. At least two will be read for the exam or research project. 17th century literature: P. Corneille: Le Cid; Molière: L'école des femmes and Tartuffe; J. Racine: Andromaque; a selection of fables by La Fontaine; Mme de La Fayette: La princesse de Clèves; Boileau: L'art poétique.

18th century literature: Montesquieu: Les lettres persanes; Marivaux: Le jeu de l’amour et du hasard; Voltaire: Candide ja Zadig; D. Diderot: Jacques le Fataliste; P.-A. Beaumarchais: Le mariage de Figaro; J.-J. Rousseau: Discours sur l’origine et les fondements de l'inégalité parmi les hommes.
