The students shall gain knowledge of the making of welfare states and develop familiarity with the great narratives in welfare development. They shall be enabled to elaborate on the “big questions”. They shall be enabled for cross-national comparisons dealing with methods, means and actors and to evaluate the actual performance in the historic context.

This course will give an overview on the history of ideas, concepts and models of social policy development in Europe and throughout the world. It will examine the role of theoretical concepts, economic and political factors influencing the process of establishing national welfare states, the importance of role models and will also deal with “welfare myths”.
Toteutustavat
Students have to read the provided literature in moodle, and write short statements. In addition, they have to submit a paper with 15.000 characters linked to the provided topics.
