General description

For major students, a year-long seminar, in which students practice scientific deduction, discourse and writing. Minor students complete the course with a literature examination.

Learning outcomes

To provide students with tools for studying and academic speaking and to familiarise them with the department and university practices. The course combines individual and group work makes it easier for students to get to know each other.

Contents

During the seminar, students 1) learn to assess and interpret different sociological texts, approaches and genres (e.g. classics, course books, articles and book reviews), 2) write different texts (e.g. summaries, essays, book reviews and presentations), 3) learn to analyse and identify different phenomena by using sociological imagination, 4) practice academic argumentation through discussions and 5) become familiar with sociology as an institution, discipline, profession and a subject.

Further information on prerequisites and recommendations

During the first period, students take Information Acquisition I in the faculty general studies. During the second period, students take Introduction to Scientific Thinking in the faculty general studies.

This module is available only in Finnish.

A course on creative writing for new students. Requires producing independent written work(s) and active participation.

Study materials

Minor students take a literature exam on a general examination day of the faculty of Social Sciences. Select four books from the following: Kinnunen & Löytty (toim.), Tieteellinen kirjoittaminen. Further information

Based on the feedback from students, this course is highly recommended also to those students, who have previously completed the basic studies in open universities. The feedback suggests that this course has taught students the use of sources, information retrieval, creating scientific texts and the functions of the department and university as well as allowed students to become acquainted with one another.
