General description

This course is in accordance with the Finnish legislation Act 424/2003 on the knowledge of languages required of personnel in public bodies, Act 481/2003 on demonstrated proficiency in the Swedish and Finnish languages, and with Decree 794/2004 on university degrees.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students will
- be able to read Swedish texts in their own field and find their main points
- be able to use Swedish sources of information independently for their own purposes
- be able to use resources and media to produce short and grammatically and structurally correct and argumentative text concerning their own field
- understand free conversational discussions related to their own field
- be able to describe ordinary issues on their own field and express and justify their opinions on them

Contents

During this course, students will go through issues on their fields of study both orally and in writing, expand their general vocabulary, and become familiar with terminology of their own special field. They will
- retrieve information from written and oral sources
- write texts related to communication situations in studies and working life
- practise oral communication (descriptions, expressing opinions, telephone conversations, etc.) and hold an oral presentation
- practise the use of linguistic tools and aids
- revise the core grammatical structures

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Numeric 1-5.
Evaluation by active participation. Evaluation of written communication is based on assignments and/or by a final examination. Oral communication is assessed by exercises, oral presentation and conversation exam. Swedish oral and written skills will be marked separately on the degree certificate on a scale satisfactory or good (1-3 satisfactory, 4-5 good).

Second year of studies or later.

Further information

During the semester, a written test will be organised for students who already possess the language skills this course aims at. Those who pass the test will be exempted from the written communication part of the course. A test of oral skills will be organised by agreement for those who have worked in their own field in a Swedish-speaking environment for a minimum of six months.
