To introduce students to the common characteristics of human language, and to the principles of structural analysis.
Contents
Lectures are divided into two parts. At the beginning, students study human language’s common characteristics and various meanings to individuals, communities and cultures. There will also be a short introduction to the different sectors and research angles of linguistics. During the second part of the course, students will be introduced to the basics of structural description of language. The most important basic concepts of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics will be included.
Modes of study
Acceptable performances are based on class participation and an exam, or on a book exam taken on a general faculty examination day.
