General description

A reading course with lectures.

Learning outcomes

Students will learn the themes, dynamics and developments characteristic of media policy in Finland and the European Union, and contrasted with media policy in the United States. The specific focus will be on the impact and implications of media policy for management work in media industries.

Contents

After completing the course the student will understand:

*Periods and change points in the European media policy framework
*Overview of broadcasting and telecommunications regulation in the USA
*Continuity and change in media policy development
*Media policy effecting opportunities and requirements for management

Teaching methods

Lectures (8 hours total) will begin and conclude the course. There will also be guest lectures to address areas of specialist importance, for example Internet governance and normative theories of the press. Readings will be assigned that students complete on their own. Students will organise with the instructor for choosing readings that are most relevant for their interests and research needs. Researching case examples in teams to illustrate the practical impact of policy on management, culminating in team presentations (5 hours).

Participation in the lectures with reflection essay (3 ECTS) and a book examination (2 ECTS).

Contemporary readings from academic journals and books, trade press sources, international news magazines, and on-line reports.
