Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student knows the basics of information literacy skills required in academic studies and knows how to utilize the services and collections of Tampere University library. The student is able to look for text books and printed and electronic resources (e-journals, e-books) on a specific subject by using different databases and electronic services. The student understands the importance of source evaluation and knows the principles of academic citation practices.

Contents

The basics of academic information seeking; an overview of information seeking process and field-related information resources; the basic methods of information retrieval; the use of services and resources provided by the library which are needed during university studies; the basics of source evaluation and using resources in an academic manner.

Teaching methods

A lecture, small group teaching, guided online exercises

Modes of study

a) a lecture, small group teaching, online exercises OR
b) a passed electronic exam at times announced by the University library. Students have to enrol on the exam beforehand. The test may only be tried twice.

Evaluation

Pass/fail.
