Learning outcomes

Students learn to understand the narratological structures and rhetorical devices of cinematic art in the form of a few important Swedish movies, with special attention on how literature and cinema can be seen to relate to one another.

Contents

The course provides an overview of the Swedish cinema. Movies and commentaries; narrative analysis and observation of linguistic and sociocultural features.

Teaching methods

Cinematheque and discussions. Active pedagogics. Complementary text commentaries from film critics.

Modes of study

Literary analyses and a final paper (10-12 pp) prepared either independently or with a pair to be presented in the seminar.

Evaluation and evaluation criteria

Numeric 1-5.
Practice work and discussion participation.

Study materials

Film showings, theoretical texts, film criticism, movie reviews.
