Learning outcomes

The course gives an advanced level understanding of organization, governance and management of higher education in system and institutional level. The course provides theoretical groundings and conceptual tools for thesis process and practical skills for organizational development.

Contents

The course is composed of three independent but interconnected units:

1. Management and system-level governance models
2. Higher education policy and science and innovation policies
3. Organization and organization culture Contents

Unit 1 aims at providing students with an understanding of system-level governance of higher education and the governance models relations to management, and change within higher education institutions. Special emphasis will be given on strategic and change management.

Unit 2 deals with higher education policy. Student will learn the role of policy plays in higher education both domestically and globally. The focus will be on the major policy issues in academe, such as access, affordability, accountability, and quality assurance. These issues will be framed from multiple perspectives: comparing and contrasting regional, state and global points of view. The module also discusses the relationship between research, policy and practice and offers an overview of most notable global think tanks, institutes and research centers in the field.

Unit 3 provides the students theoretical and practical insights on higher education organization. Special emphasis will be given on applying organizational theories in higher education organizations and special features of organization culture in higher education organizations.

The course is aimed for the KOHAMA master students. Other students willing to participate should contact Research Director or Professor.
