Learning outcomes

To present an overview of the position of Finnish in the Finno-Ugric language family, and of the language’s historical development in general. Emphasis on the development during the Proto-Finnic era, when a change occurred from a language form typical for the modern remotely related languages in the Finno-Ugric language family to a new language form shaped by Indo-European influences, and still further from Proto-Finnic towards modern Finnish. Language history inspection focuses on phonetic history and vocabulary.

Contents

Finnish as a member of the Finno-Ugric language family, language change (phonetic development, changes of meaning, new words).
