Students will be equipped with the skills necessary for advanced research and for understanding relationships between gender and social policy. The course’s aim is to enable the students to critically reflect the interrelationship of social policy and gender. The class has an explicitly comparative outlook, examining differences across countries.
Contents
This course provides students with in-depth knowledge into gender theories and gender policies in relation with special research areas of social policy. It focuses on developments in social policy and the changes that occur on the individual and/or societal levels. The specific policy field or substantive focus of attention of this course is variable, but based on a gender perspective. Students develop a common understanding of the concept of gender and the contemporary debate on that concept. This course focuses in general on contemporary developments and the structural influences on women’s and men’s individual choices, which is discussed concerning social ideas, society, employment, the family or another focus in the field of social policy. In addition, the course is taking into concern the concept of intersectionality as well as a comparative research focus.

Introduction during Intensive Programme, afterwards discussion boards and tutoring supported by Moodle and individual studies of the theoretical literature and other sources of course.
Presentation by the instructor and class discussion during the Intensive Programme; independent study and smaller written assignments (short essays on required readings in combination with moodle discussion) thereafter.
