This course is intended for students of Philosophy, Computer Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics and Information Studies.

Learning outcomes

After completing this study module, students will
- be familiar with and able to apply the usual structures of academic and scientific writing to their own writing
- be able to form series of justified arguments, link ideas logically to each other and offer suitable arguments from outside sources with their own words
- be able to make their thoughts and opinions clearly and effectively known both orally and in writing

Contents

The module will go through
- the structures and production of academic text; abstract writing
- shaping academically justified viewpoints and opinions
- textual ways to produce comparisons, contrasts and syntheses
- the conventions of referencing and drawing up bibliographies
- conversation techniques
- the principles and practices of oral presentations and discussions

Further information

During the semester, an optional test for written skills will be organised for students who already possess the language skills this course aims at. A possible oral skills test will only be available to the students who have passed the written skills test. Those who pass the test will be exempted from this course.
